Becoming Mentally Strong Friday Night Talk

FRI, Mar 29

6:30 - 8pm

with Gen Kelsang Chokyi, Resident Teacher

in person and live stream (for members)

We tend to put a lot of focus on becoming physically strong or intellectually astute, and we feel discouraged when we are stressed or worried. We may be afraid or unsure how to face and navigate what's happening within our mind.

In this talk, Gen Chokyi will explore the following:
- How the experience of mental distress invites the question "Why?"
- How to recognize a repetitive cycle of painful feelings and overcome them
- The strength of building within our mind the ability to respond vs react to life's difficulties by using wisdom-based meditations to shift our perspectives in a beneficial way

“When painful feelings arise in our mind, there is no need to panic; we can patiently accept them, experience them and investigate their nature and where they come from. When we do this, we will discover that painful feelings do not come to us from outside but arise from within our own mind."
— Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

TEACHER

As a student of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, Gen Kelsang Chokyi has been practicing Kadampa Buddhism for 19 years and is an ordained American Buddhist nun. She is the Resident Teacher at KMC Bloomington. With joy, wisdom, and experience, she shows how everyone can easily integrate Buddha’s teachings into daily life.

BOOKS & CDs

This weekend retreat will be using the book How to Solve Our Human Problems by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche. It's not required to have these books, but some people like to have them on hand during the event or read more afterward.
